Law enforcement staged a massive response to a report of someone being shot Tuesday in the Animas Valley, but first responders learned shortly after arriving on the scene that the shooting involved only a pellet gun.

The incident was reported shortly after 1:15 p.m. near the northern part of County Road 203, in the Hermosa area. At least 10 emergency vehicles responded, including EMS vehicles, the Durango Police Department and the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

A Flight For Life helicopter also responded, but was canceled at 1:36 p.m.

Deputies cleared a residence and found only a pellet gun, said La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke. He did not immediately provide any information about whether someone was shot with the pellet gun.

“The public's not in any danger at this point,” he said.
