Lectures to address Native American history in Four Corners

The Four Corners Lecture Series will present two talks about Native American history in the region.

Carrie Heitman will give a presentation called “Of House and Home: Gender, Labor and Liturgy in Chacoan Archaeology” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, 23390 Road K, Cortez. Heitman uses data from the Chaco Research Archive and the imminent Salmon Pueblo Archaeological Collection to explore “domestic” homemaking activities and the intensification of religious ideologies and practices in Chacoan great houses.

In a presentation for the Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society, Phil Geib will give a presentation called “What Cave 7 Has to Say about the Causes of Basketmaker II Warfare” at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at the Sunflower Theater, 8 E. Main St., Cortez. Geib will explore the evidence and possible reasons for warfare during the Basketmaker II period, with a focus on evidence from the most renowned Basketmaker II massacre site: Wetherill’s Cave 7 in southeastern Utah.
