Left turn attempt leads to crash

Two people were transported to the hospital Tuesday evening after a left turn collision at Bayfield's stoplight intersection. The collision happened around 5:53 p.m. and involved three vehicles.

Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Chris Balenti told the Times that Bayfield resident Shelley Jackson, 35, was westbound and stopped in the left turn lane to go south. She was driving a 2012 Nissan Versa. In the eastbound lanes, another vehicle was stopped in that left turn lane, obscuring the view of oncoming through traffic.

Jackson tried to turn left and was hit on the front passenger side by a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Ryan C. Wilbur, 29, from Gunnison. He was going the 45 mph speed limit.

Jackson had two children with her, but Balenti didn't have information on their ages, where they were in her car or whether they were injured. He thought both were using seatbelts.

The collision knocked Jackson's car back over the center median into a third vehicle that was behind her in the left turn lane, a 1999 Lexus RX 500 driven by Trista Conroy of Ignacio.

Balenti said Jackson and a passenger in the pickup, 29-year-old Chloe Lewis from Morrison, were transported to the hospital. He didn't have information on the seriousness of their injuries. He said Conroy was not injured.

Jackson's car and the pickup had "extreme damage," Balenti said.

Jackson was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way when turning left in front of approaching traffic. Balenti said it's the responsibility of the driver turning left to make sure she can do it safely.
