I guess James Pitts (Letters, Herald, Aug. 31) hasn’t been around Durango very long, or he would know that the American Legion took swift and decisive action more than a year ago when this incident first happened. Pitts states that he knows so much about the American Legion, but according to the membership rosters, he is not nor has ever been a member of Post 28. I get the distinct impression that Pitts thinks we should close our doors.
We at the Legion have gotten past this incident and are doing very well with our membership and the bar. Bad things happen to good people, and bad things happen in good places. Maybe Pitts should come see us at the Legion and hear how we have recovered, give us some support instead of running us into the ground.
Of course, all the members of Post 28 are upset and ashamed that this ever happened; but to continue to beat us down because certain people made bad decisions is not fair to what we truly do stand for. I understand that it is news that the Herald needs to print as the two people involved in the sexual assault go through their court, proceedings.
Please note it is this situation. The American Legion Post 28 is not on trial.
So, thank you to all the veterans who understand and are continuing to support us. Thank you to the community of Durango for its continued support. Post 28 has been here since World War II, and it will continue to be here long after a lot of us are dead and gone.
