Legislation must effectively address climate change

Thank you, Durango Herald, for your Sept. 25-26 story “Climate change is now,” highlighting the impacts of an ever-warming climate to Coloradans. From agriculture to tourism, the increases in heat, water loss and smokey skies are not conducive to healthy humans, livestock or our economy. While recognizing the problem is the first step, we need effective legislation to reduce our polluting carbon emissions quickly to address climate change. The cost of inaction exceeds the cost to transition to a clean energy economy.

I am grateful there is an effective climate solution that does not raise taxes and does not increase the size of government: a carbon fee and dividend system. (See energyinnovationact.org.) I am delighted Sens. John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet have expressed support for carbon pricing. May they be major “influencers” in the impending reconciliation package now being crafted in Congress.
