Something is growing at the former Arc of History site in Durango.
The beginnings of a Lego structure appeared Sunday on the metal base that used to support the infamous Arc of History near the DoubleTree Hotel, at the U.S. Highway 550/160 intersection.
And every day since, the Lego tower has grown about a foot taller – apparently under the cover of night. On Wednesday, the tower was about 4 feet high, featuring an array of Lego pieces including Star Wars-themed figures.
Naturally, The Durango Herald questioned Durango’s self-proclaimed Lego bomber Sam Bridgham, who claims to own nearly 300 pounds of the small plastic construction toys.
“I don’t know what happens after dark,” Bridgham said. “I have no memory after the sun goes down. Sometimes I wake up with my clothes torn, covered in blood. Other times I’m buried in Legos.”
Regardless, the Lego tower is a welcomed sight since the void left behind when the Arc of History was taken down with a blowtorch in August 2016. All that remains of the ill-fated public art structure is its metal base.
