Let daily skiing now commence

Storm to arrive as Purgatory opens full time

Snow is likely this weekend as a Pacific storm system is forecast to move into the Four Corners.

The best chance of snow is Saturday night, with an 80 percent chance of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service.

In Durango, less than a half-inch is expected during the day Saturday, with less than an inch falling Saturday night.

Considerably more is expected in the San Juan Mountains. A weather service statement said 6 to 12 inches could accumulate on southwest-facing slopes.

“Slow travel is very likely with accumulating snowfall over the mountain passes,” the agency said.

That’s good news for Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, which has opened for daily skiing. Sunday is Purgatory’s first Locals Benefit Day of the season, with $45 lift tickets for adults and discounts for kids available with an online coupon.

The storm is expected to clear up Sunday. The forecast calls for a couple of days with clear weather before another storm system moves in from the west on Wednesday.
