Let’s have a campaign based on issues, not identity

In the current rancorous political climate, it was so refreshing to read (“Candidates denounce ‘fearmongering’ GOP fundraising email,” Aug. 16) about a Republican candidate renouncing a gender-based personal attack against his opponent made by a party apparatchik, and actually following up with a phone call to her.

Hopefully other candidates (on both sides) will follow Cleave Simpson’s lead and we can have a campaign based on issues rather than identity. Vivian Smotherman’s graceful deflection of the unprovoked attack was also admirable and a reminder that we don’t always have to take the bait.
