One thing this pandemic has shown us is how poor internet connectivity is in Southwest Colorado, and how much we need better broadband.
Yes, there is decent broadband in a few places, but most of us are stuck with mediocre service at best.
This is because there is no real incentive for our providers to upgrade their service. They make good money charging high prices for this poor service.
The situation is eerily similar to what was going on the 1930s and 1940s with respect to electricity. For-profit companies were not willing to invest in stringing electric lines across rural areas. For that reason, the rural electric co-ops, like our own LPEA, were formed. And it worked! Now everyone has reliable, affordable electricity.
I served on the LPEA Board of Directors for three years, and I was the first chairman of the LPEA Broadband Committee. During that time, I became convinced that the only way we are going to get high quality, affordable broadband is if LPEA steps up and takes a strong leadership role.
I have created an online petition for LPEA members to show their support for LPEA stepping up. This petition does not require LPEA to do anything; it just shows member support.
If you believe that LPEA should lead in this effort, please sign the petition at the following link. And let your friends know about it! All LPEA members in both La Plata and Archuleta counties, individuals and businesses, may sign: www.ipetitions.com/petition/lpea-broadband
