As leader of the South San Juan Broadband of Great Old Broads for Wilderness, I am concerned about the construction of the wall along our nation’s southern border. The wall is destructive to wildlife migration and habitat.
I have read that mountains are being dynamited into oblivion and that scarce and sacred water is drying up. Forty of my friends and colleagues have traveled to the site of construction and they weep at the destruction.
I ask that on Day One of his administration, President-elect Joe Biden follow through with his promise to not build one more foot of wall! He can and should cancel all awarded but not yet completed border wall contracts.
As an American taxpayer, I cannot support the use of my taxes to endanger the 93 rare and vulnerable species that are affected.
Biden must withdraw any condemnation lawsuits meant to acquire private property along the proposed route of the wall. Private lands that have already been purchased or condemned, but upon which border walls have not yet been constructed, must be returned to the landowners. The border region is incredibly biodiverse, including overlapping mountain, desert, wetland and coastal ecosystems. Wildlife migration is necessary for animals to move to available water and food sources during different parts of the year. Lack of access may mean death.
The destruction caused by this enormous solid barrier must stop, for the ecosystem as well as for human rights.
