At the virtual City Council meeting on Jan. 12, new City Manager José Madrigal asked City Council to amend his contract to allow him and his family to purchase a house outside city limits.
I find it hard to believe that he is unable to find a suitable home within city limits that also fits his budget. The position of city manager lists a starting annual salary of $210,000, a salary that is $147,000 higher than the median household income in Durango as of 2018.
If earning 333% of the median income still isn’t enough to purchase a home in the city he is tasked with managing, perhaps the contract isn’t the problem.
