On June 17, Durango City Council signed off on Order 2020-10, requiring masks in all public places and referencing Section 1-16 as the penalty, which allows a fine of $1,000, and/or up to 90 days in jail.
But when I call City Council about local stores allowing people in without masks, I get told about scarcity of police officers. Sorry, guys and women, but that is not my problem! I don’t know what could be more important than protecting lives of those who want to shop in Durango. And as we have tried to shop local, but encounter many without masks, we must continue to shop online with delivery. What do I want? If I go into a store in Durango where customers are not wearing masks, I feel I should demand that the manager call the police and not tell me, “They take too long.” If they do, it is the fault of our City Council for failure to prioritize slowing the pandemic here in Durango. The spread has accelerated greatly in the last weeks and days. What do we have to do to wake up our City Council? Maybe a class action lawsuit against City Council for failing to enforce its own laws? Heck, I’ll take that one on!
