Letter: Don’t call us ‘unaffiliated;’ we’re Independent

I am pleased and excited that the Durango area had several Independent candidates running for office in recent elections.

Just a point of clarification: The term “unaffiliated” is a label placed on Independents by the two major parties who currently control our election system. The two parties wanted to create a negative connotation with that label.

After reading the news about the Independent candidates in the Durango and Gunnison area, it is clear that the Democratic Party and its state officials are out to smear and degrade Independent candidates all over Colorado. This is typical party corruption.

To counter this, I am announcing this week that Western Colorado Independent Voters has given me the green light to explore and establish a Colorado Independent Voter Caucus/Primary.

Since Independents now represent 42% of registered voters in Colorado, we need a voice in governing Colorado at the local and state level. Americans, in general, are now sick and tired of the Democratic and Republican parties dividing America.

The number of registered Independents will continue to grow both at the state and national levels. In a recent Gallup survey, the number of registered Independent nationally surged to 50% of all registered voters. Independents are not a political party, but they are Americans who want election reform and the election system controlled by we, the people, and not by the two major parties.
