Letter: Drug sales, use at Rim Drive parking lot must stop

Since the beginning of the pandemic there has been an increasing number of school-aged kids that have started using Rim Drive parking areas to sell and use drugs and party.

They are incredibly disrespectful of our community as they dump food containers, cups, bottles and napkins all over the lots.

Virtually every day the lots are used as a drug market, with dealers driving up and using their cell phones to notify customers they are there. Vehicle after vehicle drives up, the individuals purchase drugs, then trash the parking areas. These activities have now expanded to all three Rim View lots.

Durango Police have been notified and are now addressing the problem with extra patrols, requesting assistance from Fort Lewis College police, and some drug education activities.

If you are one of the many offenders, shame on you! The trashing of the lots is disgusting and the drug use rampant. Tell all your friends the jig is up. The Rim Drive drug market is out of business. Find a new base of operations or face the consequences. If you don’t want your parents notified of your activities, wise up.

If anyone witnesses these activities, please report them to Durango Police Department Central Dispatch at 385-2900. I would also request that when police make arrests, the offenders be sentenced to 80 hours of community service, picking up trash and dog poop around town!

A request has been made to the city to close the small lot nearest For Lewis College that has the most drug activity.
