Letter: Furtney overcomes challenges and collaborates

I’m Seth Furtney’s wife and I’d like to fill in a more complete picture about him.

He’s a doer. I put things in a “honey-do” pile and they magically reappear sewed, taped, glued, welded ... fixed. Many of our friends take advantage of the fix pile!

Perhaps his biggest “fix” came after he was hit by a speeding motorist while riding his bike in 2008. He sustained broken bones and a brain injury. The doctors gave him about even odds to survive. Over three months, he learned to walk and talk again. The lead doctor at Craig Hospital, who had seen thousands of injuries, simply said, “It’s a miracle.”

What happened? With his innate “fix-it” mentality, Seth rewired his brain to heal back to normal. He brings this same “can-do” mindset to a lifetime of experience in business and city government. Seth is also not afraid to row against the tide.

As an example, he was the only Parks and Rec board member to vote more than once to reject funding for the proposed $4 million bridge over 32nd Street. Listening to community members and forcing a real community conversation sustained his resolve. He persevered to help steer the decision to a more reasonable solution.

He is passionate about Durango and evaluates opportunity cost with every decision. He collaborates and has a steady resolve once he confirms the facts. I urge you to vote for him for a seat on City Council.
