Letter: Furtney was conscientious on Parks and Rec

Because of a big issue I have had with Durango Parks and Recreation (thanks, Lake Nighthorse) I have watch-dogged the advisory boards of Parks and Recreation and Natural Lands more than most.

There have only been a few board members, over the years, to do considerable research on the myriad issues that come before the boards.

Seth Furtney is one of those most conscientious members. He truly listens to Durango, pays attention to his information, and then, with a lot of heart, has the backbone to take issue on certain topics with the director of Parks and Recreation. A lot of people know that there are risks in doing so.

I have lived in four Western Slope towns (plus two on the Front Range) and have never seen a Parks and Recreation director loom so large over a community. Surely Durangoans know now there are other needs and wants in a community beyond the mega-recreational complex we now have.

As much as Seth and most of us enjoy all the outdoor amenities in Durango, most of us know when a more sustainable balance is needed.

There are many of us living out in the county that are paying close attention to the candidate orums in Durango (our hometown also) where we do the lions’s share of our shopping, dining, playing, etc. I hope Durango can stay on the trajectory that has brought so much to Town Hall in the past couple of years.
