Letter: Herald needs to rethink its “rethink” on Furtney

It is appalling that the Herald continues to support a candidate who knowingly committed, and was convicted of, multiple crimes.

The Herald excuses Furntey’s crimes in part as merely “immature” and “disrespectful.” Furntey was 41 when he committed these crimes. Furtney’s crimes showed a pattern of disrespect for private property. As a friend of Jake Dalla, I personally had many conversations with Jake related to Furtney’s crimes.

Read the case file before you continue to perpetuate the false narrative that all was forgiven and no real damage was done. The Herald’s continuing support of Furtney places politics above character.

Am I to assume that if I repeatedly cut fence and trespass on one of the properties the Ballantine family owns in La Plata County, the Herald will be as forgiving and understanding? Would the Herald be as forgiving of a conservative candidate for political office who committed these same crimes?

I think we all know the answer to these questions.
