Recent letters have discussed the misuse and abuse of the overlooks on Rim Drive.
As a person who regularly walks and bikes the college mesa roads and regularly picks up litter, let me share some observations. The overlooks at Lion’s Den, across from the Hillcrest golf course and to the south, are routinely littered. Items we have recently removed include: syringes; condoms; soda, beer and liquor cans and bottles; cigarette butts; used e-cigarette/vaping devices; food containers; and even an 18-inch machete. Much litter is unreachable, having been blown over the rim top into the brush and trees.
Students? Maybe, but probably not alone in the blame.
Solution? Place trash cans, post signs prohibiting litter and listing fines, keep up police (city/Fort Lewis College) patrols. And users of the overlooks should clean up after themselves. The golf course should police the lot across from the clubhouse for trash.
We once found a large, crushed cardboard box in that lot, which had contained golf gear probably purchased at the course. We have also witnessed cars parked precariously close to the edge. Large rocks or even guardrails could prevent tragedy.
Speeding is also a problem on Rim Drive, which is heavily used by pedestrians. Please address these problems, before something significant occurs that will leave bad memories about much worse than litter.
