My husband and I have lived in Durango since 1976, when there was no lodgers tax.
At that time, it was exceedingly difficult as a young family to make a living. Then, the city passed a lodgers tax in 1980 and we began to see a noticeable difference in the well-being of our entire community.
As tourism grew stronger so did the town’s economy. We saw more new businesses open in town, not just tourism-related, which provided additional employment. A variety of new restaurants saw their beginnings. Increased sales tax revenue, provided by visitors, also helped the city improve services to the community. Trolley service began. Air service improved.
The present increase in the lodgers tax on the city ballot is the result of months of collaboration, preparation and negotiations by community organizations with the Durango City Council. It will be a needed boost for the local economy, including support for creative nonprofits, the arts and cultural events, plus our trolley.
