Letter: Lodgers tax should benefit housing, transit

Sure, it’s great to collect other people’s (tourists’) money, but to spend it wisely is something altogether different.

I question why no one on City Council (save Barbara Noseworthy) thought it wise, prudent and all-encompassing to have the largest percentage of the lodgers tax allocated to affordable housing and transit, so all those folks who serve, feed and clean up after the restaurant-goers and hotel guests can actually afford to live in the town they serve!

As well, to be able to navigate Durango without a car is such a necessity to so many of us. Not everyone can afford the expense of owning a car, or is able to ride their bike to work. Vote “No” on Ballot Question 1-A and bring the lodgers tax plan back to the council to make allocations benefit all.
