Letter: Moving golf course is a bad idea

The editorial (March 5, “Moving golf course makes sense”) makes no sense.

Relocating Hillcrest Golf Course? Where and at what cost? The current location of the golf course is perfect. It’s centrally located in the city and close to Fort Lewis College, with spectacular views, and is used year-round.

Yes, Durango needs more affordable housing and has become an area where many of the people who work here cannot afford to live here, e.g., Telluride.

But housing located at the golf courswe site there would not be affordable. This would be considered prime real estate with housing costs easily starting at $700,000 or more. And think of the traffic congestion that would be created in this area.

Since l997, I have seen the many changes that have occurred in Durango, both good and bad. Moving Hillcrest Golf Course to create more land for housing for people who are retired or for a second vacation home is a bad idea. Durango is slowly losing its charm. Let’s not further erode the uniqueness that makes Durango so special.
