Letter: Pandemic-hoaxers have been deceiving themselves on COVID-19

Pandemic-hoaxers have been deceiving themselves on COVID-19. They have been deceived, almost always by themselves.

Many of the individuals preaching to us about what measures we should abandon in trying to avoid COVID-19 believe what they’re preaching. The number of those who have convinced themselves is patently absurd.

The pandemic-deniers are asking us to believe their anecdotal evidence and conspiracies instead of the established science of those who have made it their business to understand this disease. They live for the notoriety and attention they are receiving. They are destroying lives and whole communities with their own misguided conclusions.

It is more than apparent to most of us that the shutdowns, masks, distancing and other mandates that have been in place since last spring are still necessary to prevent further loss of life. All of the damage that has already been done to our nation has been exacerbated far beyond what would have occurred if we had been more diligent in our disease prevention behaviors.

The health care officials publicly announced that surges were to be expected because of the change of seasons and the willingness of those in our community who doubt the seriousness of this disease to disregard sensible preventive protocols. This is insane.

Let’s all continue to socially distance, wear masks, and do our best to exhibit care and compassion for those of us whose lives have already been irreparably impacted by a disease that has killed more than 300,00 people.
