“Today is 1776!” is what Lauren Boebert tweeted hours before armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, killing Officer Brian Sicknick of the Capitol Police, and injuring nearly a hundred other officers.
Her words can only be interpreted as a call for violence and sedition.
She and her supporters have already begun to backpedal and try to explain away her words. They point to her statements against violence and argue that she was not part of the riotous mob smashing windows and threatening the lives of the vice president and members of Congress. She didn’t have to physically join in because she had already rhetorically thrown open the doors to domestic terrorists.
Don’t forget that in addition to her incendiary tweets, Boebert was the only member of Congress who made and released a video flouting the laws of the Capitol and illegally brandishing a firearm in front of the very doors that would, only days later, be kicked in by a right-wing mob.
Washington law enforcement was already investigating Boebert’s video before the riots, but in light of the murder and destruction we saw last week, the U.S. Attorney should take look and the House Ethics Committee should review it, along with all her other statements.
Boebert was only sworn in a week ago, imagine what she’ll do in the next two years. She is a national security risk and should be removed from Congress.
