Letter: Republicans’ acquittal of Trump is appalling

The Senate trial for Trump’s incitement of the riot on Jan. 6 is over and to no one’s surprise, 43 Republicans voted to acquit him.

I think this is an appalling response to the threat to our democracy as well as to the lives of all the people who work in the Capitol. But when I consider that if the roles were reversed and a Democratic president had incited the riots, the Republicans would not be concerned with the fact that he is out of office and now a private citizen. They had nine investigations of Hilary Clinton over Benghazi, three of them after she was no longer secretary of state. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s statement, “Count me out, enough is enough!” didn’t last a week. Sen. Mitch McConnell was incensed on Jan. 6 but voted to acquit on Feb. 13.

A two-thirds majority is required in order to convict and I am proud of the seven Republicans who voted with the Democrats. I am ever so grateful that the American people voted him out of office and that Twitter has booted him off their platform so that he has been silenced. I hope New York and Georgia are able to convict him.

The former Cheeto-in-Chief will look good in an orange jumpsuit!
