Letter: Voting is the real issue behind Capitol protest

First, I do not condone violence. Ever. Period. But, I have an opinion about the events today to share. The people today (Jan 6th) were not protesting the Electoral vote. They were protesting the process and systems that preceeded. A lot of people peacefully protesting, and a few extreme protestors that took over. We saw this happen with last year’s ‘protests’ and ‘peaceful demonstrations’ in various states and cities around the US, being hijacked by troublemakers. Nancy Pelosi said at the time ‘people do what they do’. So, it is with some disappointment that I noted some politicians’ narrative on today’s turmoil. (Jan 6 2021) I did not hear that same discourse about the looting, rioting, and burning in Minneapolis, New York City, Oregon, Los Angeles, naming a few. A litmus test here would sadly fail. There should be one set of principals for all sides of the political arena. That aside, I respectfully submit that, perhaps, there needs to be a nationwide standard of voting, a single voting number, probably issued at the time the social security number is assigned to US citizens, at birth or time of legal gained citizenship. Whether voting in person, by mail, or absentee ballot, that number would be validated before the vote is counted, much the same way that social security numbers are confirmed by the ‘E verify’ system to establish authorization to work in the US.
