She fails to mention the ridiculous cost of this monstrosity at an estimated $4,100,000. Ya, that’s right, $4 million.
The 32nd Street crossing is already adequately addressed with the current pedestrian crossing light. Meanwhile, try crossing Camino Del Rio from the trail near the 9th Street bridge on a bike to access downtown. It’s a nightmare.
And why isn’t this money being used to fix the dilapidated sections of existing trails behind River City Hall and south of the Santa Rita Bridge? For that matter, why isn’t this money being used for the Recreation Center itself, where the roof is leaking in the gym once again, leaving dangerous puddles and ruining the floor?
And why isn’t the Rec Center being expanded? It’s the best thing that ever happened to Durango. But after 20 years, it’s overcrowded with different activities fighting over gym time and lines to use equipment upstairs.
We need a new Parks & Rec director who understands the difference between down to earth real needs versus a pie-in-the-sky monument to overspending.
Let’s refer to this proposal at 32nd Street as the abomination it really is, “Boondoggle Bridge.”
