Letters: An apple and a simple act of kindness

I’m 82 and, using my cane, I walk my Lab every morning. We pass a neighbor’s apple tree. Some of the apples are within reach of my cane, which I use to knock one down. I was picking up my apple from the sidewalk when I looked up to see a young man. He offered to pick apples for me. I thanked him for the offer. He returned to a car with his wife. I asked if they had stopped just to help and they had – an act of kindness that reminds us of our concern for one another; acts we so desperately need in these troubled times in which anger, despair and disregard for others are so prominent.
