What is the policy of The Durango Herald’s letters to the editor? I mean, really, is there one?
Many “letters” are one-sided, factless rants that belong in the Opinion section, clearly identified as such.
There are already outlets for long-winded, hate-spewing, politically oriented nonsense, and they go by names such as Facebook and Twitter.
What happened to respectful dialogue, and eliminating such phrases as someone wanting to “vomit” when they hear an opinion different from their own?
Surviving newspapers should, or at least could, be the last bastion of real dialogue between all of our citizens. If we retreat to our respective silos, don’t speak, and marginalize each other, we are doomed.
If we reach out and work together there is nothing we can’t accomplish.
The current zero-sum game of politics, where everything is viewed in terms of winning and losing, is a sham, perpetuated and foisted upon us by political interest groups and networks who make money by pitting us against each other.
Compromise is not a loss, it is how we make progress as a people and nation. As such, letters to the editor should be respectful to all, pertinent to a story or issue, or be relegated to a thrash bin.
