You captured every single thing wrong with the proposed pedestrian bridge in your recent editorial (“
I frequently walk the length of the river trail and no other bridge design smacks the eye in such a hideous way, with its industrial, cheap, outdated look.
City Council made a huge mistake with the monstrosity of the new motel on Camino del Rio, and while it is too late to fix that oversized box, councilors should not continue on this collision course between sensible projects and insane costs.
We could all laugh about the Arc of History sculpture and perhaps affectionately call it our own, but no one in their right mind will speak of this bridge with affection – only distaste, scorn and another shaking of one’s head at its folly and folie a cinq.
They say that you can’t fix stupid – and since every councilor is anything but, please fix this before you ruin the architectural integrity of our town.
This design overwhelms the river, dominates the landscape and offends the aesthetic nature of the river corridor.
All of us with eyeballs can see this disaster and recoil.
Difficult as it is to make a U-turn after years on a project, please stop the process and reconsider. Accept the need to bring the community back to the drawing board with you to rework the design, size, and related costs – and keep our beloved town safe from a bad bridge.
