I don’t understand City Council’s hesitation to require masks when entering stores or walking on Main (“
The CDC has clearly recommended masks when less than six feet from another human. That is impossible to maintain in a store here or when walking in town. If we prepare for possible tourists this summer, they are likely to come from Texas and Arizona where rules are very relaxed, possibly bringing infection to Durango (possibly unknowingly).
We have done a great job so far keeping COVID-19 at bay in Durango. Now is not the time to loosen restrictions and bring devastation to our small town.
Being smart about how we open up is the key to staying open and welcoming tourists if they come. By not wearing masks in stores, we are putting the workers at risk and other shoppers, too.
Wearing a mask is not taking away people’s rights. It’s giving everyone the right to shop and not get sick from asymptomatic carriers. As we open up and Durango citizens start traveling and bringing COVID-19 back here, those who live here should feel safe to shop, get outside and try to live a normal life.
Life is not going to be as we knew it for a long time. We need to embrace that and figure out how to be as safe as possible and still live life, but not at the expense of people’s lives.
No shirt, no mask, no service.
