Letters: Don’t sneeze in my general direction

It amazes me how upset so many people are over the temporary requirements to wear a mask, claiming infringement on their constitutional rights. Well, then what about the requirements for: income taxes, sales tax, driver’s license, vehicle tags, parking meters, hunting and fishing licenses, marriage licenses, telecommunication taxes, eyeglasses required while driving if applicable, seat belt laws, searches to enter federal offices or get on a plane, laws against urinating in public?

Then there are zoning laws, alcohol laws, eminent domain, many laws addressing public safety, voting laws, and on and on!

These protests over masks are a misguided use of one’s time and energies, as well as naive and unsophisticated. It shows no caring for others and an extreme level of narcissism!

The purpose of a mask is not to protect yourself but to protect those you are near just in case you have the virus with no symptoms. Anyone not wearing a mask obviously doesn’t care about others, caring only about their own personal agenda.

Think about it: How would you feel if a person infected with COVID-19 didn’t have a mask on when they sneezed in your direction, or even just spoke, and a week or so later you are lying in the ICU feeling like you are suffocating and dying. What would you like to say to that person? “I’m glad you didn’t care about my wellbeing and stood up for your rights even though you trampled on my inalienable right to a long life”?
