Letters: Durango gem club blows away Wyoming visitor

I am a seasonal visitor to Durango and recently became a member of the Four Corners Gem and Mineral Club. On my drive from Sheridan, Wyoming, to Durango, I thought about what I wanted to do during my visit.

I was looking forward to spending time with family in Durango and enjoying the outdoors, but I also hoped to learn something new. Once in Durango, I found the Gem and Mineral Club online (www.durangorocks.org) and reached out to a few of its members. They responded with a wealth of information and encouraged me to go and see the club for myself.

I did and was blown away by the tools and materials available in the shop.

I quickly decided to join the club. Club members welcomed me with open arms even though I had little knowledge of lapidary and jewelry arts.

Having access to the shop’s resources made it possible for me to learn new skills with minimum expense. My skills improved greatly from taking classes taught by excellent instructors at the shop. During scheduled open shop hours, I learned a great deal from shop stewards and members who generously shared their time and talents with me and each other. I value these hands-on learning experiences the most.

As I make my way home to Wyoming, I am not only filled with gratitude but also feel inspired by the work and generosity of the artists at the club.

The Four Corners Gem and Mineral Club is an extraordinary asset for Durango and the region. Go check it out!
