Letters: Guidelines are there to protect workers

In response to the article about the health guideline variances, what is the point of guidelines if we never abide by them and just get a variance? (“

As a raft guide, I would not appreciate being put in that position. Four strangers on a boat, after a ride in a bus? It only takes one who is asymptomatic to spread disease, then a raft guide has it and spreads it some more. All of this while sitting in a boat with half the normal number of paying customers.

In the rafting industry, the burden of paying the guide is placed heavily on the customer through tips. Half a boat of people is not worth a guide’s time. During the day, many winds blow upstream, right in the guides’ faces, increasing exposure.

These guidelines were put in place to protect customers and employees. A variance bypasses these protections so the employer can make money at the expense of the workers’ health and finances.

I know as a business owner it’s a very scary time, and many truly believe they are helping their employees, but no job or business is worth compromising your health for, or your vulnerable loved one’s health.
