One recent letter questioned the intelligence of a face covering ordinance and another claimed Democrats have encouraged rioters – a predictable and familiar rant. Another claimed that Durango city councilors lack intelligence because they believe the epidemiological science that clearly indicates wearing a mask helps to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus – a new level of absurdity.
But President Trump outdoes each of the locals. In a rambling mess of word salad that we have been normalized to accept as a presidential speech, Trump leaps upon a jobs report and proclaims a great day has dawned. In a bizarre twist, the president turned his attention to George Floyd on the day of Floyd’s memorial service and said, “Hopefully, George is looking down right now and saying ‘This is a great thing happening for our country.’ This is a great day for him.”
It is hard to conceive of Floyd having a great day since he is dead.
Trump’s callous disregard for Floyd’s family must be a new low.
But who is not having a great day? Trump is not. His disapproval rate now reaches 55% with a pathetic 41% approval rating and Joe Biden beating him in every national and state poll of consequence. Nov. 3 may be the light at the end of the four-year tunnel of madness inflicted by this administration.
