If ever there was a time when competent leadership was needed, it is now, and it will be needed for the foreseeable future as a result of the pandemic. For this reason, I will be voting for Marsha Porter-Norton for La Plata County commissioner in November.
Porter-Norton has a record of leadership and collaboration having facilitated thousands of meetings and forums in our area and working with more than 100 organizations to help them achieve their goals. As facilitator for the Hermosa Creek Workgroup, she was instrumental in federal legislation establishing the Hermosa Creek Wilderness Area and Special Management Area. She worked for several years across many jurisdictions to establish Firewise of Southwest Colorado (now Wildfire Adapted Partnership).
Her work has extended beyond the county to the entire region, thus she has established relationships with leaders throughout Southwest Colorado.
Porter-Norton has been recognized for her leadership by the Durango Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado State Forest Service and the La Plata County Boys and Girls Club. Her board experience included Big Brothers/Big Sisters of La Plata County, the La Plata County Historical Society and the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado.
When recovery begins from the pandemic, leaders will be needed who can collaborate with all levels of government, agencies and individuals to move forward. Porter-Norton’s record of collaboration, knowledge of the region and relationships with other leaders in the region will be invaluable in recovering from the devastation to our economy due to the pandemic.
