A recent Herald contained Joe Matthews’ obituary. The article summarized his remarkable life and philanthropies.
However, there was no mention of his most significant local philanthropy.
Joe was a huge benefactor for Manna, the Durango soup kitchen. He provided the funds to complete much needed repairs and improvements to the original building.
In addition, he later gave a very large donation toward the construction of the Culinary Arts Building. The existence of the Culinary Arts Training Program at Manna is largely due to his generosity.
In life, Joe was a private person and avoided publicity. He’s with the angels now and his contributions to this wonderful small town and the wider world live on.
