Letters: Our bored teenagers turning to crime

I, too, have been shocked by the amount of tagging taking place in the Durango area this spring (“

The tagging on the abutments at Bakers Bridge and elsewhere defaces Durango and the natural world we have always taken pride in. More of this vandalism has occurred at the 550 overpass at the Animas River Trail near Santa Rita Park.

But here’s the thing. Apart from the defacing of public property, this vandalism will leave a lasting impression on the tourists we count on for our local economy. If there is an impression Durango has a gang problem, or young people running amok, those tourists may choose another destination. So I hope someone comes forward to name the culprits who will then be given a choice: spend their summer vacation completely restoring those defiled areas or their parents can pay the city to repair the damage.

Let’s hope this is not a new trend of youthful irresponsibility in Durango.
