Letters: Please help to rescue our gift shops

Please join us in spreading the word about supporting the important and overlooked gift industry.

Independent gift retailers help create the unique style and personality of Main Streets everywhere. This industry is all about relationships and those who make a living working in this industry absolutely love the job and all the people involved in it.

Independent retailers play a huge role in supporting local economies, from the store owners and their staffs to the manufacturers that produce the goods and the representatives who bring them together. Without retail small businesses, the individuality of towns across America will all become dull.

Due to COVID-19, independent retailers are considered nonessential and therefore are not moving inventory. That then leads to manufacturers not shipping goods and sales reps not writing orders. Our cash flows will not recover until much later in the year, not immediately upon reopening.

As long as inventory is moving, retailers are making money, placing reorders leading to the vendors making money, and then the sales agencies get commission, and if all got the aid that they need, they could all stress a little less about paying back any loans.

Please spread the word for shop small!
