I must confess that I have not felt the same about our country since December 2013. Why then?
This is when 20 little kids were slaughtered in the Sandy Hook shooting. Although I’m a long time elk hunter, I’m a proponent of strict gun control and thought as awful as the Sandy Hook shooting was, at least it would surely result in gun control measures. I was wrong, as Republicans blocked the implementation of any gun control.
As a special education teacher for 24 years on the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Whiteriver, Arizona, and for nine years in Montrose at a middle school, I think the character of a nation can be determined by how its kids are treated. It is so bad in our country that kids have had to organize and ask us adults to protect them. Still we have done nothing.
Our representative, Scott Tipton, has opposed any kind of gun control.
Isn’t it a kind of systemic racism when Black kids are much more likely to die from gun violence than white kids and we do nothing? What kind of human being is Tipton when he clearly demonstrates that guns are more important than the lives of our kids? Isn’t it time we demonstrate decency and send Tipton home to Cortez?
Let’s replace him with someone who truly cares about our kids.
