Letters: Stop the shaming about mask-wearing

Enough. I am growing weary of all the mean-spirited letters to the editor that attempt to shame those in our community who don’t wear masks. They have been called cowards, evil and rude, and other writers go on to disparage any visitor from out of state, for they may carry the virus.

This attitude will do more long-lasting damage to this community than any virus ever will. Durango is a great community, I assume that’s why many of you moved here. And like it or not, many in our community depend on visitors from out of state for their livelihood.

Many of these writers were most likely those very visitors once upon a time; how ironic.

We need to try our best to be friendly and courteous to all, regardless of what they’re wearing on their face or what color license plate they have on their vehicles.

It’s best for our community.

While many will wear masks, some choose not to. Painting them with a scarlet letter will not be successful in changing their minds, and will surely do more harm than good.
