Letters: Teach your children well about climate change

The idea of letting Durango school students “reach their own conclusions” about climate change is patently absurd on its surface (“

This was not a decision based on real science. It is a political stunt to assuage the right-wing climate deniers.

The fact remains, the science of climate change is contested by a mere 3% of the world’s climate scientists. And that 3% is in servility to the very energy industries responsible for the environmental disasters taking place today.

The stench of shareholder value trumping the survival of our blue orb is all over this decision.

Even a report in yesterday’s news tells us of the rapidly melting ice cap at the North Pole. It is even becoming a shipping lane. It is also giving Russian oil and gas exploration easy access to those natural resources near the Arctic Circle.

The ice sheets and glaciers in Iceland are melting at any alarming rate. This is not some natural climate cycle of the Earth.

Real science, with real computer models, irrefutably concludes that this is a man-made crisis.

Will those Durango students, as they become adults, prefer coal-fired electricity production?

Will they vote for, or authorize, the dumping of toxic waste into our oceans and watersheds?

Will they vote against a return to Clean Water and Clean Air rules?

Will they be part of the problem or, part of the solution?
