Letters: This bridge is awesomely bad!

I am all in favor of extending the Animas River Trail to the north and understand that the crossing of 32nd Street and the railroad tracks is a major issue. However, the renderings of the bridge in The Durango Herald are ridiculous. It is such overkill and an eyesore that I cannot believe this is the only option.

The southern view crossing the river is completely destroyed!

The mix of bridge types don’t match or even complement each other.

I cross the river at 32nd Street multiple times a week, and the barricaded sidewalks on the current bridge work just fine. Is there no way to keep these in use? It’s not like the train crossing is for freight trains traveling at fast speeds. At certain times of the year, the train doesn’t even run!

I am simply in awe that this is what the city has accepted and is planning to move forward with. I ask that the final decision not be made in haste until a better, less-obtrusive, and more visually pleasing option can be found.

We are not in a rush here – let’s take the time to make the right decision.
