Letters: This holiday, give a livable world

Thank you to The Durango Herald for publishing your excellent Dec. 11 article, “

It’s sad that teaching our kids about climate change is still considered “risky business, despite virtual unanimous agreement among the scientific community.” Yale climate opinion polls show 77% of Coloradans think schools should teach about global warming and 67% perceive global warming will harm future generations. Public support is important, as it guides policy-making.

Despite the numerous scientific reports warning us of mounting consequences, we stand united in inaction. Carbon emission levels continue to rise, when the reverse is needed.

In this holiday season, I invite you to join me in contributing to the true welfare of our kids. Take a step to reduce your carbon footprint by increasing the energy efficiency of your home or transportation. Or give the gift of a livable world by donating to a climate nonprofit: Citizens Climate Education, or 350.org, or The Climate Reality Project, or, locally, 4Core.

Lastly, contact Rep. Scott Tipton and encourage him to support the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act.

By working together for commonsense solutions, we can have 2020 be the year of climate action – a gift we can feel good about.
