The idea of by-district voting for commissioners has resurfaced. I believe it would curtail voter rights at the most grassroots level. Most counties are represented by three commissioners. Those three make decisions; for example, the commissioners have been working with Durango City Council on a very difficult issue in our county, homelessness. A change to by-district voting would take away your ability to vote for two of the three commissioners. In 1992, a group of county citizens attempted home rule. The voters refused to contemplate disenfranchisement. In the current election, I urge a vote for the demonstrated abilities of (Democrats) Matt Salka, District 3; and Marsha Porter-Norton, District 2.
