Letters: We need to escape this methane cloud

Have you heard about the methane cloud we live under here in the Four Corners area? We have some of the highest concentration of methane pollution here in the entire U.S., and it’s cause for serious concern.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and is 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in the first 20 years after it is emitted. It’s responsible for 25% of the climate change we’re already experiencing here in Southwest Colorado, such as reduced snowpack, earlier spring melting and less water during the growing season.

The methane cloud also compromises our health: Emissions from oil and gas operations contribute to poor air quality on the West Slope. Methane contributes to harmful ground-level ozone. La Plata County received an “F” from the American Lung Association for its high levels of ozone pollution.

Colorado became the first state to regulate methane pollution from the oil and gas industry in 2014 but those old rules aren’t enough to safeguard our health and environment. Fortunately, there is a new proposed protection that could significantly cut methane pollution. The new rule is a huge step up, but it won’t happen without your support.

I urge all those in Durango and the surrounding areas to come to the Air Quality Control Commission hearing on Dec. 11 and speak out in favor of protecting our health and our environment. Strong new methane protections are vital to curb emissions and improve our air quality.

The meeting is at the La Plata County Office (1101 E 2nd Ave, Room E103) and public comment begins at 6 p.m. I hope to see you there.
