I am writing to urge voters to re-elect Stephanie Moran to the 9-R school board. Her service over the past seven years has been invaluable. She is a great listener with an open mind and no hidden agenda. Her 40-plus years of teaching, at every level from elementary through high school, and her work with returning students to help them earn their high school degree through the Durango Adult Education Center, has given her a great understanding of student needs.
She supported the Pathways program that helps transition 18- to 21-year-olds with disabilities into more independent lives. Stephanie understands the challenges both teachers and students face, and her experience is a huge asset to our school board.
Stephanie worked hard to help pass the mill levy that included money for both public and charter schools because she believes students should attend school where they can thrive. She fought for increased teacher pay to bring our teachers’ pay to the second-highest on the Western Slope, and also voted for classified staff to earn a living wage, all while keeping the budget in the black.
She has recently been working to help make our schools safer with sensible ideas like vestibules and increased funding for social-emotional learning approaches. We need to keep Stephanie on our school board.
