Letters: We’re proud to help restore cutthroats

Thank you for the informative article on the saving of the newly discovered San Juan Lineage Cutthroat Trout (“

The discovery and subsequent rescue of this subspecies of cutthroat is very important and historic. At the end of the article it references the “dedicated conservation effort” that dates back to the early 1990s to recover native Colorado River cutthroat in 23-plus miles of contiguous reaches of the main stem (often referred to as the West Fork) and East Fork of Hermosa Creek.

I want to recognize the efforts of the Five Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife in that “dedicated conservation effort.”

Five Rivers has invested over $20,000 of chapter funds and easily over 1,000 man- and woman-hours in this work. Trout Unlimited is dedicated to protect, reconnect, restore and sustain our cold water fisheries.

The cutthroat restoration on Hermosa Creek and subsequent efforts concerning the San Juan lineage cutthroats is of the highest priority for Five Rivers. We stand ready to assist in cutthroat restoration and protection for the foreseeable future.
