Southwest Life Health And the West is History Community Travel

Library hosts ‘Local stories: A Ute family history you didn’t know’

The community is invited to hear the rich stories of longtime Ignacio resident Johnny Taylor Valdez’s family's deep roots in the local area from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield.

Valdez is an expert on Southern Ute history and a descendant of Ute tribal leader Kitty Cloud and John Taylor. Taylor was a former enslaved person who served in the Civil War and went on to become a local Buffalo Soldier, land owner and tribal interpreter.

This program is part of History Live!, a series of events celebrating the humanities in September in Southwest Colorado.
