Library teaching reading techniques

Pine River Library is hosting Storytime Skillz on Tuesday, May 10. It is designed to provide parents, grandparents, and other community volunteers an understanding of Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR).

Participants will learn about the elements of early literacy and the most effective, research-based methods for promoting these skills through the presentation of storytime. This knowledge brings intention to the reading of stories for kids and supports early learning of language skills and more. Graduates of this course will be eligible to volunteer as a storytime substitute or an outreach storytime volunteer. The training will be run twice, first from 10 to 11:30 a.m. (with childcare available, please RSVP for that) and then again from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Pine River Library also is among Colorado libraries offering easy and free access to early literacy learning tips for children from babies to preschool age. The free app is called "CO Play & Learn." It offers quick learning tips accompanied by colorful graphics for parents and caregivers to help children develop pre-reading skills, and simple games and activities to do together in both English and Spanish. Activities are leveled for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, and focus on reading, talking, singing, writing and playing. The app is available for free download for both iOS and Android devices through the iTunes store and Google Play.
