Library to host local equine history program

Liz Francisco, San Juan National Forest Columbine Ranger District archaeologist, will lead a presentation about the local history of horses, mules and burros from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield.

Native Americans, hard rock miners, early settlers and the San Juan National Forest have all benefited from these animals both in their willingness to assist with a variety of tasks and as a companion while traveling through the San Juan Mountains.

The presentation will also include a show and tell of historic pack saddles, panniers, and firefighting equipment in the library parking lot.
